Explosion Proof Cabinets for LNG Terminal Power Distribution

Explosion Proof Cabinets for LNG Terminal Power Distribution

At an LNG terminal, power distribution equipment sits beside process trains that move methane at cryogenic temperatures, and the failure of one feeder can take down send-out or boil-off gas handling. Explosion proof distribution cabinets for LNG terminal power supply are not a rating exercise alone. The cabinet flame path, temperature class, ingress protection, cable entry layout, busbar bracing and breaker coordination all interact with the terminal safety case. In projects I have reviewed, the most expensive rework has come from freezing a cabinet order before the hazardous area schedule and final load list were firm. The sections below work through the specification inputs that change the quotation, the test package, and the eventual site acceptance.

Explosion Proof Power Distribution Challenges in an LNG Terminal

LNG terminals combine process load continuity with a marine atmosphere and classified gas zones. Motor loads such as send-out pumps, boil-off gas compressors and regasification vaporizers can start while refrigeration systems are running, so the distribution cabinet has to manage both normal current and motor starting transients without exceeding temperature limits inside the enclosure. The terminal may also sit on a jetty or reclaimed coastal ground, where salt spray works on glands and bolt heads months before the first visible corrosion appears. This is why the electrical specification should not stop at the enclosure rating.

Most published guidance starts with gas group IIA and temperature class. That is correct but incomplete. A cabinet that passes certification can still fail the project if the cable entry layout does not match the cable schedule, or if the busbar system cannot withstand the fault level from the main switchboard. The timetable is the hidden constraint. In EPC projects, the vendor packages for compressors and pumps may still be changing after the distribution cabinet long-lead items are placed. The specification must therefore leave controlled allowances for motor final data without reopening the flameproof design.

A large East African oil and gas project we supplied shows the discipline. It covered wellpads, a central processing facility and pipelines, some inside a national park boundary. The electrical scope had to meet zero safety incidents, low maintenance and on-schedule delivery under constrained access. LNG is not the same fluid, but the procurement sequence is similar: certified equipment only becomes useful if it arrives with the right cable entries and the correct fault rating for the site.

Specification Inputs for Explosion Proof Distribution Cabinets

The specification file should include the hazardous area schedule, the single-line diagram, the maximum prospective short-circuit current, the motor and heater load list, the incoming and outgoing cable sizes, the required cable entry direction, the ambient temperature range, and the control or metering functions. Missing any one of these inputs forces the manufacturer to assume a conservative value, which usually creates cost without adding safety.

For LNG terminals, the hazardous area schedule is the most difficult input to restore later because it comes from dispersion analysis and equipment leak potential, not from the electrical team alone. A cabinet placed near a tank vent or compressor seal may be Zone 2 on the first issue and Zone 1 on the second. The difference changes protection method and sometimes the enclosure material. If the terminal will be reviewed by a classification society for a marine application, the society may also require specific certificates that are not automatically included in an industrial IECEx package.

For smaller instrument and control circuits, an intrinsically safe approach can remove the need for a heavy flameproof enclosure. <Intrinsically Safe vs Explosion Proof: Real-World Applications Guide> explains where each protection method fits and how that choice changes cabinet terminals, barriers and the certification boundary.

Enclosure Material and Protection Method Selection

LNG service is not automatically a marine environment, but many terminals are coastal. Copper-free aluminium with a powder-coated finish is the usual choice for general process area panels because it balances weight, cost and corrosion performance. 316 stainless steel is worth specifying for jetty, berth and coastal installations where salt spray and washdown are continuous. GRP has a place in low-voltage lighting and small power distribution, but it needs careful review for high fault level applications because the enclosure does not carry a metallic earth path in the same way.

Ящики соединительные взрывозащищённые BHD91

Материал корпуса Typical LNG terminal application What to confirm before order
Алюминиевый сплав без содержания меди General process area power panels Coating thickness, copper content, marine paint performance
Нержавеющая сталь 316 Jetty, berth, coastal and offshore LNG service Grade, passivation, gland plate and fastener material
GRP Low-voltage lighting and small power in corrosive areas Impact strength, UV stability, flame performance
Чугун Rare for LNG cabinets; used where impact risk is extreme Coating system, earthing continuity, weight allowance

Product selection should follow the same logic. The HRMD92 stainless steel distribution panel series has an IP66 rating and an ambient range from -60°C to +60°C, which suits terminal installations that see both salt and temperature cycling. The aluminium HRMD93 version carries the same IP66 rating and uses bottom entry as standard. Клеммные вводы кабелей still matter more than the enclosure itself. A certified wall is quickly compromised if the entry gland does not match the armouring standard or if site technicians enlarge holes later.

If your LNG terminal includes boil-off gas compressors or send-out pumps with high starting current, confirm the short-circuit withstand and busbar temperature rise before the bill of materials is frozen. Send the single-line diagram and load list to gm*@***om.com and we can check where a standard panel stops and a reinforced configuration begins.

Sizing and Circuit Configuration for Terminal Loads

Start from the load list and do not rely on connected load alone. LNG terminals have motor starting current that can be five to seven times full load, and the distribution panel may feed more than one compressor in a group. The incoming breaker, busbar and removable gland plate must be sized for the maximum demand with the largest motor starting, not for the sum of nameplate currents multiplied by a derating factor.

Circuit configuration should preserve selective coordination with the upstream switchboard and the downstream motor starter. If the terminal operates gas compressors that start on load, a standard miniature circuit breaker arrangement may not clear a fault without tripping the upstream feeder. The design review should map the protection sequence from the main switchboard to the final motor terminal.

Factory-built busbar systems are preferable when the circuit count is high. The manufacturer can place the circuit breakers, terminals, earthing bar and cable entries in the same enclosure and test the assembly as one unit. Site-assembled cabinets are possible, but they introduce environmental exposure during installation and make it harder to maintain the certified flame path. Modular multi-circuit configurations are useful for LNG terminals because loads are added late. The design should reserve blank entry holes with certified plugs, not open holes, so that late cable additions do not require returning the cabinet or replacing an enclosure.

Testing, Documentation and Sourcing for Explosion Proof Cabinets

An IECEx or ATEX certificate proves the design. It does not prove the specific cabinet on your order has been assembled correctly. The factory acceptance test should cover insulation resistance, high voltage withstand, torque checks on terminals, IP verification, temperature rise or design reference, and mechanical operation of interlocks. For LNG terminal duty, request the test report and the certificate together, not the certificate alone.

Documentation is where procurement teams can save time. Ask the manufacturer to submit as-built drawings, gland schedules, earthing details, material certificates for stainless steel if used, and a terminal marking schedule before the cabinet leaves the factory. If the terminal falls under a classification society or a national marine requirement, confirm that the documents satisfy that review early. Adding society approval after production is more difficult than reviewing the data package at approval stage.

Supplier qualification for these cabinets often comes down to what records accompany the enclosure. <Оценка поставщиков взрывозащищённых распределительных ящиков из Китая> covers the difference between a supplier that can build a certified enclosure and one that can prove it through test reports, and why that distinction matters for repeat orders.

On a terminal package, the inquiry should be precise. If the load list is still provisional or the hazardous area schedule has not been approved, do not order the cabinet against a superseded single-line diagram. Send the current single-line diagram, motor list, cable schedule and hazardous area schedule to gm*@***om.com or call +86 21 39977076 / +86 21 39972657. Warom can confirm whether the required short-circuit rating, temperature class and entry layout can be met with a standard factory-built cabinet or need a revised configuration.

Common Questions About LNG Terminal Distribution Cabinets

Are all power distribution cabinets in an LNG terminal required to be explosion proof?

Only the cabinets installed in classified hazardous locations must carry the explosion proof rating. A distribution room in an unclassified area can use weatherproof enclosures. That said, many terminal operators specify explosion proof cabinets across the board because later plant modifications, new vents, or revised dispersion studies can reclassify an area. Retrofitting a certified enclosure is usually more expensive than the initial premium. If the terminal layout is not yet stable, it is often cheaper to buy the rated cabinet now than to add a second procurement round after the safety case changes.
