Zone 2 Explosion Proof Light Fittings: Minimum Buyer Checks

Zone 2 Explosion Proof Light Fittings: Minimum Buyer Checks

Zone 2 explosion proof light fittings fail procurement reviews for one repeating reason: the markings and certificate scope do not match the operating area. A fitting can carry an Ex marking, pass a visual inspection, and still be rejected because the equipment protection level, temperature class, or ambient range is wrong. I have seen this happen when a tender package required Zone 2 compliance and the vendor offered a Zone 1 Ex d unit, assuming a higher rating would be safer. The added robustness cost more without solving the actual requirement, and the cable entry arrangement then had to be reworked. Zone 2 has its own minimum checks, and they are not the same as Zone 1.

What Does Zone 2 Actually Require from a Light Fitting?

Zone 2 is the least severe gas hazardous area class under the IEC zone system. An explosive gas atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation and, if it does appear, it lasts only for a short period. That classification still imposes a hard boundary on the lighting equipment because any surface, arc, or hot component that reaches the ignition temperature of the present gas becomes an ignition source. The minimum safeguard is an equipment protection level of Gc under IEC 60079 or ATEX category 3G, which means the fitting remains safe in normal operation. Ex ec, Ex nA, and Ex nR are the protection methods commonly accepted for this level. A Zone 1 flameproof Ex d fitting can also be used, but it carries heavier installation, gland, and maintenance obligations and is not automatically the cheapest compliant option.

Which Markings and Certificates Are Mandatory for Zone 2 Fittings?

Before comparing price, read the nameplate and certificate. A valid Zone 2 light fitting must show the full marking, not just the word Ex. The certificate has to be issued by an accredited body under IECEx or ATEX and must list the exact model, protection method, gas group, temperature class, and ambient range.

Item Minimum requirement for gas Zone 2
مستوى حماية المعدات Gc
فئة ATEX 3G
Protection methods Ex ec, Ex nA, Ex nR, or a higher EPL with correct certification
مجموعة الغاز IIA, IIB, or IIC as matched to the site; IIC covers most industrial gases
فئة درجة الحرارة T4, T3, T5, or T6 based on the gas ignition temperature
Ambient rating Must cover the actual installation environment

What must an IECEx certificate include?

An IECEx certificate for a Zone 2 fitting normally references IEC 60079-0 and IEC 60079-7 for Ex ec or IEC 60079-15 for Ex nA. It states the certificate number, the issuing test body, the exact model designation, gas group, temperature class, ambient range, and any conditions of safe use. If the certificate carries an X, read the schedule. The X means specific installation conditions apply, such as a required gland type or restricted orientation.

Where does ATEX Category 3G fit?

Under the European ATEX system, Zone 2 gas equipment is normally Category 3G. The manufacturer issues a declaration of conformity after a notified body reviews the technical file, but the certificate itself must remain traceable. For projects outside Europe, IECEx is often the more portable route, while some countries still require a separate local certificate.

When one light fitting is quoted for both an IEC project and a North American site, the marking conflict becomes visible late in procurement. <لوحة التحكم المعتمدة ضد الانفجار من NEMA 7 مقابل ATEX> covers how the NEMA and ATEX compliance paths diverge and why the same equipment cannot assume acceptance under both systems without the stated certificates.

How Do Temperature Class and IP Ratings Shape the Minimum Specification?

Temperature class is not a performance preference. It is a legal ceiling on the hottest surface temperature the fitting can reach in service. T4 corresponds to a maximum surface temperature of 135°C, T5 to 100°C, and T6 to 85°C. The chosen class must be below the ignition temperature of the gas or vapor with enough margin. Process areas that handle common solvents may accept T4, but carbon disulfide service can require T6 because its autoignition temperature is only around 90°C.

The driver and LED combination determine the achieved temperature class. A fixture can be sold as LED and still carry T3 or T4 depending on the heat dissipation path, ambient rating, and driver design. Warom’s BAT86 LED floodlight, for example, is rated for ambient conditions up to +60°C with IP66 protection and a 5000K LED module, which makes it suitable for many outdoor Zone 2 installations where solar load and salt exposure are present. The HRNT95 series carries the same IP66 protection with a wider wattage range and an ambient rating up to +58°C. The IP rating is separate from explosion protection. IP66 prevents dust and powerful water jets from entering, but an IP66 fitting with no Ex marking belongs in a non-hazardous area.

Cable entries matter as much as the housing.

Zone 2 enclosures depend on the entry devices as much as the housing. <Explosion Proof فتحات الكابل for SWA Armored Cable Safety> explains flame path requirements and why the gland, cable, and fitting must be treated as one certified assembly, especially on armored cables in process areas.

If your program includes both Zone 1 and Zone 2 light fittings, check the certificate scope and cable entry list before freezing the bill of materials. A mixed package may share one housing but require different glands and protection methods. Send the area classification drawing and gas group to gm*@***om.com and we will compare the two areas side by side.

What Mistakes Do Buyers Make When Selecting Zone 2 Fittings?

Four mistakes repeat across tenders and site audits.

  • Selecting a Zone 1 fitting without checking the certificate. A Zone 1 Ex d fitting is permitted in Zone 2, but only if the Ex d installation rules are followed. The cable glands must keep the flame path, and a missing blanking plug can void the certification.
  • Confusing IP rating with explosion protection. An IP66 weatherproof fitting can keep water out and still be unacceptable in Zone 2 because it has no certified Ex protection method.
  • Specifying the wrong temperature class. A T4 fitting is useless in an area where the gas ignites below 135°C. The wrong class is a rejection at inspection, not a minor revision.
  • Ignoring cable entry details. The gland material, sealing ring, and cable diameter must match the certificate. We have corrected RFQs where the specified cable was 2 mm outside the approved clamping range.

The most common Zone 2 fitting error

In one chemical plant audit, the failed item was not the LED fitting itself but a non-certified blanking plug in a spare entry. The plug kept water out, so the site team assumed it was acceptable. The inspector read the certificate’s conditions of use and removed the circuit from service until the correct Ex e plug was fitted. The fitting had been safe in ordinary duty, but the unapproved component broke the certification boundary.

How Should You Verify Zone 2 Light Fittings Before Finalizing the Order?

Zone 2 light fittings rarely fail because the LED or driver is weak. They fail audits because the certificate scope, temperature class, or cable entry list was never checked against the area classification drawing.
