King Salman International Complex
- Project Overview
The King Salman International Complex project is located in Ras Al-Khair Industrial City, Saudi Arabia. Developed under the leadership of Saudi Aramco, it is a flagship project of the world-class maritime industry and a core component of Saudi Arabia’s national industrial strategy. Covering a vast area of approximately 11.25 square kilometers (4.5 km × 2.5 km), the project integrates diverse business formats including fully equipped shipbuilding docks, ship repair docks (capable of servicing Very Large Crude Carriers – VLCCs), slipways, terminals, ship lifting systems, production workshops, warehousing facilities, utility zones, as well as employee living and recreational areas.
As a super complex integrating shipbuilding, repair, and operation services, the project is committed to building a globally competitive maritime industrial cluster, driving the upgrading of Saudi Arabia’s maritime industry and creating a large number of job opportunities. As a key part of the project’s infrastructure, the lighting system needs to cover multiple scenarios such as open area lighting, high-risk operation zone lighting, road lighting, and public area lighting. It is directly related to the safety of project construction, operational efficiency in later stages, and comfort of personnel operations, serving as a vital support for ensuring the stable operation of the project throughout its life cycle.
Adopting a phased construction model, the project launched the construction of core maritime engineering in 2017, with phased completion and delivery scheduled for 2022–2025.
- Customer background and challenges
2.1 Client Background
The core client of this project is Saudi Aramco, one of the world’s largest integrated energy and chemical companies, holding a pivotal position in the global energy sector. Saudi Aramco adheres to the philosophy of “world-class standards and maximization of full-life-cycle value” in all its project construction, imposing extremely stringent screening criteria on suppliers in terms of technical strength, product quality, international certification qualifications, and project service capabilities. For this cooperation, Saudi Aramco expected the lighting supplier to deeply understand the special needs of complex maritime scenarios and provide an integrated lighting solution that is safe, reliable, energy-efficient, and intelligent.
2.2 Core Challenges
- Extreme Environment Adaptation Challenge: The Ras Al-Khair region in Saudi Arabia has a tropical desert climate, characterized by scorching heat in summer, large temperature differences between day and night, frequent sandstorms, as well as high winds, waves, and salt spray due to its coastal location. This places extremely high demands on the lamps’ high-temperature resistance, low-temperature resistance, dustproof and waterproof performance, and corrosion resistance, requiring them to operate stably for long periods in harsh environments.
- Complex Scenario Lighting Requirements: The project covers diverse scenarios including open dock squares, high-drop ship repair areas, narrow workshop alleys, and densely populated living quarters. Among these, high-mast lamps need to achieve full coverage lighting for large-area docks, ensuring uniform illuminance without blind spots and avoiding lighting interference with operations. Lighting in operation zones must meet explosion-proof and anti-glare requirements to guarantee safety in high-risk working environments.
- High-Standard Compliance and Energy-Saving Requirements: Saudi Aramco mandates that all products must obtain internationally authoritative certifications. Meanwhile, in line with the global trend of green and low-carbon development, the solution must minimize energy consumption while ensuring lighting performance to achieve operational cost savings.
- Project Delivery and Service Challenges: With the project advancing in phases, there are strict time requirements for lamp delivery cycles, installation guidance, on-site commissioning, and post-operation maintenance response. Suppliers must possess global supply chain guarantee capabilities and localized rapid service capabilities.
- Our Solution
In response to the project’s requirements and challenges, WAROM Technology established a professional international project team to conduct in-depth demand research and technical discussions, tailoring an integrated lighting solution featuring full-scenario adaptation and full-life-cycle support. The solution mainly consists of three core modules: customized product system, intelligent control system, and full-chain service support.
3.1 Customized Product System
- Customized High-Mast Lamp Solution: For large open scenarios such as docks and squares, WAROM Technology customized a series of 20–35 meter high-mast lamps with a modular design. Each lamp pole can be equipped with 6–12 sets of high-efficiency LED lamp heads. Through precise optical design, wide-angle light distribution is achieved to meet the high-definition lighting needs of large-area operation zones. The lamp poles are made of high-strength galvanized steel with special anti-corrosion treatment, effectively resisting salt spray and sand erosion. The lamp housings are die-cast from aluminum alloy with an IP66 protection rating and high-temperature resistance, perfectly adapting to the extreme desert coastal environment.
- Energy-Saving Technology Empowerment: The entire product series adopts high-efficiency LED light sources with high luminous efficacy, reducing energy consumption by more than 50% compared with traditional metal halide lamps and helping the project achieve low-carbon operation.
3.2 Intelligent Control System Integration
The solution integrates a DALI intelligent lighting control system, enabling centralized management and precise adjustment of all lamps in the project. It supports light control and intelligent dimming functions to further save energy consumption.
3.3 Full-Chain Service Support
A closed-loop service system covering pre-sales, in-sales, and after-sales has been established:
- Pre-sales: A technical team was dispatched to the project site for technical communication to optimize the lighting solution.
- In-sales: Professional engineers were assigned for on-site inspections to ensure stable product operation.
- After-sales: Relying on WAROM’s localized service teams in the Middle East and Saudi Arabia, maintenance services are provided to quickly resolve various issues during equipment operation, ensuring the lighting needs of the project throughout its life cycle.
- Implementation Process & Timeline
Following the principle of accurate docking and efficient execution, WAROM Technology closely aligned with the project’s phased construction schedule and steadily advanced the implementation of all work:
- May 2020: Demand Docking and Solution Demonstration: WAROM Technology conducted multiple rounds of technical discussions with Saudi Aramco and the project’s general contractor, optimized solution details based on site conditions and operation requirements, and finalized the confirmation of the final quotation and the signing of the technical agreement.
- August 2021: Commencement of Large-Scale Production: After the completion of scheme approval, large-scale production was initiated. Relying on WAROM’s intelligent production base, product quality and production efficiency were guaranteed.
- May 2022: Logistics Transportation and On-Site Delivery: An exclusive logistics plan was formulated to complete the full-process logistics services including product packaging, customs declaration, and sea transportation, ensuring the safe and on-time arrival of products at the project site; product acceptance and warehousing were completed in coordination with the project owner.
- Achievements and Data Demonstration
With its customized solution and efficient project execution, WAROM Technology’s lighting system has delivered multiple value outcomes for the project, with key achievements and data as follows:
